Charlotte, NC (July 6, 2017) – As the General Assembly completed work last week to conclude its regular 2017 session, the North Carolina Home Builders Association (NCHBA) expressed its gratitude for an important regulatory reform by naming Sen. Dan Bishop as its "Legislator of the Week."
NCHBA spotlighted important issues throughout the session, which included building code regulatory reform and requirements of consistency and transparency with regard to local governments' assessment of water and sewer fees.
But the association of 13,700 member construction firms called special attention to Sen. Bishop's work on a needed workers' compensation measure.
As reported by North State Journal, an amendment sponsored by Sen. Bishop reversed a court decision against businesses "that held an employer could be liable for compensation related to medical conditions or injuries incurred before employment, and merely exacerbated on the job." NCHBA said Sen. Bishop "was the linchpin of the legislative effort to achieve this result, which was achieved through negotiation with the NC Advocates for Justice, whose members typically represent injured workers."
"I am proud to advocate for a measure that restored fairness and common sense to our workers' compensation system, which in recent years lawmakers had worked so hard to reform and ease undue burdens on North Carolina job providers," said Sen. Bishop. "It has been a critical component to our rapid ascent among the states in business expansion and job growth, and we need to keep it that way."
